Oxford United versus Portsmouth

It was great to meet Pep Clotet this morning before the game. Kane Hemmings is a strange case.. whatever is going on with him? Is he staying with the club or going to pastures new? He said to my friend that he wasn’t starting the game nor was he injured. Before we had our meal in the restaurant he spoke to Peter Rhoades Brown and told him that he was actually injured.. it seems very fishy.

Our line up was: Eastwood, Ribeiro, Nelson, Williamson, Ricardinho, ledson, Thomas, Payne, johnson, Ruffels and Henry.

Subs for United: Scott Shearer, aaron Martin, Rob Hall, Joe Rothwell, Jon Obika, Canice Carroll and Gino Van Kessel. Where was Xemi? He was very unlucky to miss out. Is Pep finding the spine to the team? Is he finding out about his best centre defensive partnerships? His best forward line?

In the early stages of the game Simon Eastwood`s kicking was a bit suspect. Portsmouth thought that they had scored but the ref deemed that there was a push on a United player. I would like to see it again on Channel 5`s goal rush.

At half time it was goalless.

2 minutes into the second half Wes Thomas got his 2nd goal in 2 games. United looked miles better than on Tuesday night when we played Cheltenham Town. The atmosphere today was cracking. Portsmouth`s following was impressive but once Pep Clotet replaced James Henry with Hall in the 76th minute and then Johnson with Van kessel in the 79th minute you could sense that only one team would go on and win a tight game of football. Robbie Hall had another storming game and in the 82nd minute our debutant Gino van Kessel blasted the ball home after beating 2 Portsmouth players.

The referee Graham Salisbury was replaced by Marc Wilson as it looked as if he pulled his hamstring. In the 90+4 minute Josh Ruffels bundled in his 2nd goal in 2 games and that was it.

Oxford United have such a good core of attacking strength in Jonathon Obika, Jack Payne, Xemi Fernandez, James Henry, Robbie Hall and Gino Van Kessel.

Its a shame that one of our new signings Ivo Pekalski is out injured until after Christmas.

On we go to Scunthorpe away next Saturday. Will we come away with another 3 points?
