Oxford United

Since I have been supporting Oxford United which was from 2004/05 I have witnessed many lows.

We had been relegated in the final game of the season by losing 3 – 2 by Leyton Orient who had to clinch a win for automatic promotion. One of the U’s players got sent off. We were climbing a mountain. At the final whistle there were many tears. United’s great history evaporated with the knowledge of going out of the league of 92 and having to play non league football for 5 years when in 2010 we reached the play off final. Going to the new Wembley was amazing, one of my most awesome experiences I can still recall.

It was an horrific period as in 1986 Oxford beat QPR at the Old Wembley to win there only piece of Silverware to date in the FA Cup.. In 2017 can we lift the Checkatrade Trophy?

We had to close our academy. We had many managers.. Darren Paterson gave way to Chris Wilder who brought in Mickey Lewis. Our chairman was Kelvin Thomas who eventually handed the reins to Ian Lenagan and on the board was his son Simon Lenagan.

More Recently Ian Lenagan gave the reins to Darryl Eales and Mark Ashton although the latter left the U’s to join Bristol City.

In the Wilder era we had players such as Billy “Elvis” Turley, Mark “the beast” Creighton, Simon Clist, Danny “Bully” Bulman, James “Beano” Constable, Ryan Clarke, Alfie Potter and Sam Deerimg.

When we were in league 2, Chris Wilder cowered in the dugout whilst we were playing Torquay United. When it wasn’t going well, Mickey Lewis started to shout instructions from the sidelines. After the final whistle we heard news that Chris Wilder had left the club to take on the managerial duties at Northampton Town. Ian Lenagan told the fans that he had no idea where Wilder was. It was a bitter end to a great period when we got promoted back into the league with goals from Matt Green, James Constable, an own goal from Ryan Clarke and a great counter attacking goal from Alfie Potter which was assisted by Sam Deering. Oxford were back in the big time. 35,000 yellows were in attendance.

The only way is up. COME ON YOU YELLOWS!
