On Saturday, thousands of Oxford United fans went to Middlesbrough to see if the yellows who had already knocked out Merstham, Macclesfield, Rotherham and Newcastle could cause another cup upset.
Aitor Karanka named a very strong side with the likes of Grant Leadbitter, Stewart Downing and Rudy Gestede all starting. Michael Appleton named Manny Ogboola amongst the substitutes as Jack Stevens was cup tied due to playing for Oxford City in the earlier rounds. Benji Buchel hasn’t been in the 18 for some time. Is Benji leaving the Yellows in the summer? Michael Appleton made one change from the defeat to Southend United in recalling Kane Hemmings in place of Liam Sercombe.
In the 2nd minute Antonio Martinez had a great chance in giving the U’s the lead but the Boro keeper saved. In the 26th minute Chris Maguire barged Stewart Downing to the floor. Grant Leadbitter made it 1 nil to the hosts. When Chris Maguire had a “goal” chalked off Rudy Gestede went up the other end and made it 2 nil.
Half time: Middlesbrough 2 Oxford United 0
Once the second half had started Chris Maguire had made the score 2 – 1 with a delicious chip that went into the top corner. 12 seconds later it was 2 all when Antonio Martinez pounced on a loose ball.
The yellow fans erupted. In the 86th minute Stuani broke the hearts of the U’s fans as he poked the ball beyond Simon Eastwood.
Good Luck to Boro in the last 8.
