This weekend it is the FA Cup first round, I love the FA Cup as there can be many cup shocks as league 1 and 2 teams compete with teams from the lower leagues.
On Friday Night Eastleigh played Swindon Town in front of the BBC cameras. It was great to watch a couple of ex Oxford United lads play. I thought that Ryan Clarke had a great game. Should Swindon have won the game 2 – 1 as from a header it looked as if the ball had gone in the net before Clarkey saved it. Premier League clubs have use of video technology however the lower down the leagues you go you find that it isn’t available so in this particular game the referee and linesman can only give what they see so it was chalked off.
Eastleigh took the lead in the second period through Mikael Mandron. James Constable could have put the Spitfires ahead but his shot just went past the post.
Michael Doughty the QPR Loanee had a few long shots for Swindon but Clarke was equal to each shot.
Swindon unfortunately lost Nathan Thompson through a suspected hamstring tear. Yaser Kasim was made captain and he drove his team mates forward as when Clarke flapped at the ball he brought Doughty down who got up and equalised for the visitors.
The final score was Eastleigh 1 Swindon 1. The replay on the 15th will be interesting, can the Spitfires cause an upset?
Merstham got into the first round for the first time and played in front of a crowd of just under 2,000 people when they played host to Oxford United. The visitors had lost there last home game in league 1 so it was a welcome challenge. Many had it billed as a banana skin but Oxford won 5 nil with goals coming from, Alex MacDonald, Josh Ruffels, Tyler Roberts and 2 coming from Kane Hemmings.
Who are the U’s going to face in round 2?
