Oxford United vs Millwall

On Saturday, The U’s took on the Lions. Last time out in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, Millwall beat us 1 nil through a Lee Gregory strike. It wasn’t enough for the Lion’s to progress Into the Wembley showpiece.

It was quite an even first half. Marvin Johnson is getting better and better with every game he plays for the U’s. Is the Englsh game tougher than the Scottish game?

Oxford were unchanged from the away point that came the week before in Burslem. Chris Maguire nearly opened the scoring with a scrumptious free kick that went inches past the side netting. Will Maguire play out the whole season at United? With Christmas on the horizon I hope that Darryl Eales and Michael Appleton are talking to the out of contract players.

Liam Sercombe scored through great running and intelligence by Marvin Johnson. Is that his first United assist?

Nearing the end of the first half Millwall were level through a brilliant long range shot by Steve Morison, who’s scored close to 200 goals.

Half time 1 all.

In the 50th minute Aiden O Brien struck to put the Lions 2 – 1 up and ultimately punish the backtracking defence. I thought that Aiden O Brien was lucky to have secured all 3 points for the visitors as he had already been shown a yellow card.

Are you now allowed to challenge with two feet off the ground? To try and get back into the game, Michael Appleton sacrificed Phil Edwards and Joe Skarz for Tyler Roberts and Kane Hemmings. I thought that Oxford’s passing game was pleasurable on the eye but Millwall’s route one hoof ball was much more effective.

This game has gone and next weekend, Michael Appleton takes a trip into the unknown when they travel to Merstham who ply there trade in 8th tier of the pyramid.
