Coventry City vs Oxford United

On Tuesday night Oxford United travelled to Coventry City for the first league fixture at the Ricoh Arena. Coventry started the night lying bottom of the League one table. The Ricoh was sparsely populated with fans.

Behind the visitor’s goal it was packed with Oxford fans full of vocal support. Behind the host’s goal the stand was empty with the tribute to Jimmy Hill. Are the City fans quieter than Southend United’s? From the 1st minute Coventry were the best team. Oxford United failed to control there passing which led to Ben Stevenson’s stunning goal, our passing wasn’t as crisp as it was versus Bradford City. I thought that Johnny Lundstram had a poor game, leading to City breaking us down and attacking with purpose. Before half time, there was miscommunication between Simon Eastwood and Josh Ruffels which led to United letting in Marvin Sordell for a soft second.

Half time: Oxford United 0 Coventry 2.

In the second period, we gave the ball away as we had done in the first period. I thought that we were marginally better. Maguire was unlucky when his free kick was punched away by Lee Burge. Chris Maguire was class all night. He’s an important cog in our team. Did we show complacency? Saturday we harried Bradford all over the pitch however last night we were poor. You could say like Chalk and Cheese. I hope that Crowley and Roberts start on Saturday as Crowley’s pace and endeavour brought a consolation goal from outside the area.

Full Time: Coventry City 2 Oxford United 1. I’m not sure why our away form is so troublesome. On our away fixtures, we’ve lost to Fleetwood Town, Sheffield United, Bristol Rovers, Southend United and now Coventry City. We’ve only won away at Bolton Wanderers. Is the team lacking confidence or is the system incorrect?

On Saturday we travel to Port Vale. Can we win away from home for just the 2nd time? If there’s any trouble, then I can see our home form being absolutely crucial.

COME ON YOU YELLOWS!
