Southend United vs Oxford United

On Tuesday night, I went to watch The Mighty U’s versus a Southend side that lost heavily to Northampton on Saturday.

Chey Dunkley was in place to make his 50th league appearance for United. Since we brought Chey from Kidderminster Harriers in January 2014 he’s displaced Johnny Mullins and Jake Wright in the heart of the U’s defence. He’s fast becoming our best defender. He shows so much grit and passion. His blocking versus Swindon was vital and preserved our clean sheet.

I was very impressed with Marvin Johnson and Chris Maguire’s drive to get forward and force a save from Mark Oxley the Southend goalie. Why didn’t Anthony Wordsworth get a red For elbowing Chris Maguire or the goalkeeper for wasting time?

In the 1st half Oxford looked really promising however against the run of play Southend scored in what was there first really effort on goal. Ryan Leonard.. He ALWAYS scores against us. In first half stoppage time Kane Hemmings scored his 3rd goal of the season.

At half time it’s 1 all. I’m really liking Joe Rothwell, he made some great running and with all the chances United made we should have been home and hosed. In the 74th minute controversy occurs when Phil Edwards is “adjudged” to have handled the ball in the area. How was Anthony Wordsworth allowed to consign the U’s to another defeat at Rootshall?

At the weekend Oxford face Bolton. Can we rid our away demons and get a positive result after the 2 – 1 defeat? Without Simon Eastwood I think that we would have suffered a heavy defeat.

Come on you yellows.
