Oxford United vs Northampton Town

As the dust settles on what was a very feisty encounter between 1st and 3rd at the Kassam Stadium, I have come to the conclusion that after 90 minutes of strange refereeing decisions that the Cobblers are probably going to walk towards the league 2 crown as they have now gone 12 points ahead of the U’s which equates to United having to win at least all there remaining games to have an unlikely chance of beating the Cobblers.

In the line up, Benji Buchel kept his place in goal where there was a first full 90 minutes for Jordan Bowery. When I saw the U’s line up I thought that Michael Appleton was opting for a 4-3-3. Why wasn’t Alex MacDonald starting? In the Cobbler’s lineup Danny Rose made his return. In the first half Oxford United got into some really decent positions although we couldn’t make the Cobblers pay as Jordan Bowery screwed his half chance over the fence end. Midway through the half Danny Hylton got booked for what seemed to be a very harsh decision. 12 hours on from the game I still don’t understand why the referee booked him.

When Liam Sercombe went down under a malicious looking challenge from Danny Rose the U’s fans around me thought that it was a two footed off-the-ground challenge which resulted in Rose getting just a yellow card.

0 – 0 at the break.

Oxford made a few chances but we can’t just hope to walk the ball into the net. Why didn’t Bowery just shoot? It is so frustrating. In the 69th minute, Keith Hill, the ref gave the Cobblers a highly controversial penalty as the ref thought that Mullins handled the ball. If you put your hand by your side can you purposefully handle the ball? The Cobblers scored the resulting penalty but for me, the game as a whole was very very disappointing. When will referees punish teams for cheating, diving and wasting time? Jake Wright had to leave the field, was Appleton protecting his captain or has Wright got an injury? I hope that it’s the former instead of the latter.

I will be at the Kassam Stadium on Saturday when Oxford entertain Accrington Stanley. Can the U’s get back to winning ways? Good Luck to the Cobblers as they outplayed us.
