Oxford United vs Plymouth Argyle

Last night Oxford United played host to top of the league Plymouth Argyle who had opened up a 5 point gap between themselves and the U’s.

There weren’t many changes from either side although Alex MacDonald came in for Callum O Dowda who came back from international duty shortly before we faced Leyton Orient and Danny Hylton came in for the suspended Jordan Graham who can now play in our next home match vs Barnet.

In the first 20 minutes it felt like a goal  was approaching as Kemar Roofe had a goal disallowed for Danny Hylton’s foot going out of play. All night United had chances but the woodwork kept the Pilgrims in it. On 32 minutes Liam Sercombe gave United the lead as George Baldock teed him up. As Liam Sercombe used to play for Exeter this was a great time to show his credentials. After that goal from Sercombe; Ryan Taylor and Alex MacDonald had shots saved by the post and fine goalkeeping by Luke McCormick. In the second half Oxford United had to defend like Lions as the Pilgrims had corners and free kicks which were thwarted by a combination of Slocombe, Wright and Mullins.

In the end Plymouth just couldn’t find an equaliser. It finished 1 nil and the U’s are just 2 points from taking top spot in the table.

On Saturday we play Barnet. Can United make the Kassam a fortress?
